Snorkelling in Coral Bay at a glance

The park authority names Bills Bay and Paradise Beach for snorkelling from the shore. Five Finger Reef, Oyster Bridge, The Lagoon and Maud's Landing are 4WD destinations. Do not expect a sealed road to any of the outer sites. Entry to the Ningaloo Marine Park is free, so shore snorkelling costs only your gear.

Conditions change with wind, swell and tide. This page gives the rules and the practical points that apply, not a promise of clear water or a calm day. Ask at the tour offices on the day, and stay within your own ability.

Five Fingers Reef near Coral Bay

The outer reef stop that most visitors ask about.

Access is by 4WD

The park authority lists Five Finger Reef as a 4WD destination. Do not expect a sealed approach. The state of the tracks changes, so ask locally on the day.

Tide and conditions

There is no fixed best tide that applies to Five Fingers or Oyster Bridge. Ask the tour offices about the tide, the swell and the wind for your day before you drive out.

Not a default beginner spot

Five Fingers is a reef trip away from the main beach, and you get there on tracks. Weak swimmers and first-timers do better at Bills Bay or on a guided trip. Go with someone, and tell a person where you are going.

Safety in the water

Currents, boats and signs.

Currents

A caravan park FAQ describes stronger current when there is wind and swell, and advises staying within your ability. No spot is reliably free of current, and there is no safe drift line that stays the same every day.

The boat channel

From the boating facility, boats use a marked channel to the north and should not cut across the shallow coral. Swimmers keep clear of boats and moorings. Do not use navigation or sanctuary markers as mooring points.

Where swimming is prohibited

The official boating guide marks the area of the boat facility on the southern part of Paradise Beach as "Swimming Prohibited". That is a local rule, not a ban on the whole of Bills Bay.

Bills Bay rules โ†’

Sun, warnings and help

Wear sun protection and keep drinking water with you. Warnings for sharks, weather and park closures change, so check the DBCA alerts and SharkSmart before you swim. In a life-threatening emergency call 000. A nursing post exists in town, and the nearest pharmacy is in Exmouth, according to a caravan park.

Protect the reef and the animals

Rules and good practice for the water.

Do not stand on or touch coral

Do not stand on corals, touch them or break them off, and check your fins. A local operator recommends sunscreen labelled reef safe. That is advice, not a legal requirement, and it does not mean a product is harmless to the reef.

Turtles

Licensed operators must keep at least 1 meter from a turtle while snorkelling, may not touch, ride or chase it, and must leave it a path to the surface. The rule covers commercial operations, but it is a sound standard for everyone in the water.

The reef after 2025

The Australian Institute of Marine Science documented serious heat damage on Ningaloo in 2025: the north and center were hit harder than the south. Condition differs from site to site and changes, so ask operators what the reef looks like now.

Fishing

The Maud Sanctuary Zone is closed to fishing and taking marine life. A shore-based zone south of Bills Bay along Paradise Beach allows line fishing for finfish from the shore only. Zone boundaries matter, so use the map and local signs.

Guided snorkelling and gear

If you would rather go with a crew.

The two-hour trip on the Miss Coral Bay III combines coral viewing and snorkelling for A$105 per adult, A$70 per child aged 6 to 15 and A$99 for seniors on the 2026/27 tariff, with equipment included and a refundable deposit of A$50. A three-hour turtle eco tour includes snorkel gear but no wetsuit. Manta ray tours include a wetsuit and gear. Rental prices for gear in town vary, so ask before you buy.

Turquoise Bay and the other snorkel spots further north are part of the Ningaloo Reef guide. For a full list of what to do here, see things to do in Coral Bay.

Coral Bay snorkelling: frequently asked questions

Can I snorkel from the beach in Coral Bay?

Yes. The park authority names Bills Bay and Paradise Beach for snorkelling from the shore. Stay out of the boat facility area on the southern part of Paradise Beach, where swimming and snorkelling are prohibited.

Do I need a 4WD for the reef sites?

For Five Finger Reef, Oyster Bridge, The Lagoon and Maud's Landing, yes. They are 4WD destinations, and no sealed road should be expected. Bills Bay and Paradise Beach need no off-road vehicle.

Is snorkelling in Coral Bay safe for beginners?

Bills Bay suits a first try more than Five Fingers, but no spot is free of risk. Currents get stronger with wind and swell, and boats use a channel in the bay. Stay within your ability, keep clear of boats and consider a guided trip.

What does it cost to snorkel?

Entry to the marine park is free. Tours and camping are charged separately, for example A$105 for the two-hour coral viewing and snorkelling trip in 2026/27.

Is the reef healthy?

The 2025 heat damage was serious on Ningaloo, worse in the north and center than in the south. The state of each snorkel site changes, so ask a local operator on the day.
