Whale sharks off Coral Bay
Whale sharks pass along the Ningaloo reef every year, and a few operators take guests from Coral Bay to swim with them. The trip is a full day. A spotter plane searches for animals, a boat takes the group out and swimmers go in the water in small turns.
There is no sighting guarantee. The season depends on whom you ask, and the price on one operator's page shows two different numbers. Both points are explained below, so you can plan around them.

When is the whale shark season?
Three sources, three answers. They describe different things.
| Source | What it describes | Months |
|---|---|---|
| Park agency (DBCA) | Best time across the whole Ningaloo Marine Park | March to August |
| Ningaloo Marine Interactions | Its whale shark day tour from Coral Bay | April to June |
| Coral Bay Eco Tours | Its "Whale Shark Safari 2026" listing | – |
The park-wide window is a guide to when the animals are around. It is not a tour calendar. For a swim from Coral Bay, the operator's own dates count. Do not assume that the same dates apply to every operator, or to operators in Exmouth. For the northern side of the reef, see the Ningaloo guide.

Two kinds of whale shark day
Both are run by licensed local operators.
The 9-hour day tour
Ningaloo Marine Interactions lists its Whale Shark Odyssey from April to June, about 9 hours. It uses a spotter plane and includes lunch and photos. The page shows A$600 for adults at the top and A$650 in the list of what is included. Treat neither as the confirmed fare. Ask for the exact price when you book.
The 2026 safari with small groups
Coral Bay Eco Tours lists a Whale Shark Safari for 2026. You meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Coral Bay office, and a bus takes you to the boat. Guests swim in alternating groups of 10, with a maximum of 1 hour of swim time with the animal, according to the operator. A repeat trip or refund after a day without a sighting is not promised. The operator recommends experienced swimmers. No price is shown on that product page.
Mantas are a separate trip with a different season. See the manta ray guide. For a general comparison of day trips, see Coral Bay tours compared.
Rules and licensing
You swim with whale sharks through a licensed operator, not on your own.
Licences
The park agency's operator handbook, in force from April 2026, limits the number of licences for whale shark tours. In-water contact with whale sharks and whales needs separate legal authorisation. Do not look for a private way to approach an animal.
Older distance rules
An older official visitor guide lists 3 m from the head and body, 4 m from the tail and no more than 10 swimmers at a time. It also lists no touching or riding, no flash photos, no camera extensions and no motorised swim aids. That guide is not dated for 2026, so treat the numbers as background. Your guide briefs you on the rules that apply on the day.
Behaviour in the water
Keep your distance, do not chase the animal and do not touch it. Give it room to turn away.
Humpback whales: a second season
Different animals, different months.
The park agency gives June to November for the humpback migration along Ningaloo. Ningaloo Marine Interactions sells its Coral Bay humpback trip from July to September. The gap between the two is the difference between when the animals pass and when this product runs. The trip takes about 7 hours and includes lunch. A whale watch is listed from A$220 for adults and a swim option from A$600, as seen in October 2026. Interaction is not forced, and on some days you may only watch from the boat.
Air temperatures in the season
Long-term monthly averages from the Bureau of Meteorology station at Learmonth Airport, used here as a regional comparison. They are not measured in Coral Bay.
| Month | Average high | Average low |
|---|---|---|
| April | 33.4 °C | 20.4 °C |
| May | 28.7 °C | 16.0 °C |
| June | 24.9 °C | 13.2 °C |
| July | 24.5 °C | 11.4 °C |
| August | 26.6 °C | 12.3 °C |

Before you book
Four checks.
Dates and product
Check the operator's own dates for the year you travel, and which product you are booking.
The price
Ask which of the listed prices applies, and what is included. Marine park entry itself is free, while tours and camping are charged separately.
Swimming ability
One operator recommends experienced swimmers. Be honest about your level.
A day without a sighting
Ask what happens if no whale shark is found. Do not assume a repeat trip.
Whale sharks in Coral Bay: frequently asked questions
When can I swim with whale sharks from Coral Bay?
The park agency gives March to August as the best time across Ningaloo. One operator lists its Coral Bay day tour from April to June. Check the dates of the operator you want for your year.
Will I see a whale shark?
No one can promise it. A spotter plane helps to find animals, but a sighting is not guaranteed. One operator states that it does not promise a repeat trip or a refund after a day without a sighting.
How much does a whale shark tour cost?
One operator's page shows A$600 and A$650 for adults, which is a contradiction on the same page. Another operator shows no price on its product page. Ask for the exact fare before you book.
Can I swim with whale sharks on my own?
No. Tours need a licence, and in-water contact with whale sharks needs separate legal authorisation. Go with a licensed operator.
How close may I get to a whale shark?
An older official guide lists 3 m from the head and body and 4 m from the tail, with no more than 10 swimmers at a time. Your guide explains the current rules on the boat.
What about whale shark tours from Exmouth?
Exmouth operators run their own trips, with their own dates. They are covered in the Ningaloo guide, not here.
